My paintings are loosely realistic, with interpretive color. I create or use the color of the painting surface as one element, building on it through a combination of color fields and marks, working toward a painting that has both abstract and realistic elements. Each painting contains a spark: the ‘why’ of the painting—such as a particular quality of light or a dynamic pattern of shadows, settling fog, sparkling water. I enjoy working ‘en plein air’ and am inspired by quality of light and pattern. I have lived in the mountains of western Maryland since 2008, having relocated from the Washington D.C. area.
